A report by Spanish publication AS (h/t Mirror) mentions that Manchester United have been in contact with the representatives of Pau Torres regarding a potential transfer move for the Villarreal defender.
United’s interest in the Spaniard dates back to the summer window last year. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Axel Tuanzebe, and Eric Bailly in his squad but he still wants to add another defender.
Villarreal, however, deny having been contacted by United for a move. The Yellow Submarine have set a €50million release clause that will increase to €65million in the last 15 days of the transfer window.
And they are not prepared to negotiate a lower fee. This means United would have to splash serious cash before hoping to begin discussions with the 24-year-old.
On top of that, the Red Devils are not the only club interested in a move for the Villarreal youth academy product. The report adds that Real Madrid have also made a more ‘discreet’ approach for the centre-back.
Torres, however, stated earlier that he is happy at his current club and has a long time ahead of him to achieve all that he desires.
Torres has been highly impressive for Villarreal this season as his team sits just one point off 5th position. Unai Emery’s side have just lost 6 out of 30 league games so far, conceding a paltry 33 goals.
And the Spanish defender has a big role to play in this. Torres has the potential to be a long-term partner for Harry Maguire at United and is also very young, with his best years arguably still ahead of him.
