It was not long ago that Manchester United’s transfer strategy felt like a scattergun approach, built more on market opportunity than long-term coherence. Now, as Sky Sports reports, the club is seriously considering a move for Jonathan Tah — a player who, in both profile and pedigree, suggests a return to a more stable and strategic line of thinking.
At 29, Tah is not a signing for the future but for the now. A cornerstone of Xabi Alonso’s exceptional Bayer Leverkusen side, he has quietly matured into one of Europe’s most reliable central defenders. With more than 50 appearances for club and country this season, Tah’s availability on a free transfer should not be mistaken for a lack of quality. His contract expires in June, and the Bundesliga champions have already accepted his departure.

United’s pursuit is not without its complications. Bayern Munich are long-standing admirers. Barcelona have made tentative moves. And Real Madrid — with Alonso likely arriving at the Bernabéu — would offer both sporting appeal and emotional continuity.

Yet Barcelona’s familiar financial turmoil may remove them from contention. “Barcelona’s issues have caused registration delays in the past,” the original report notes, referencing the Dani Olmo situation. United, in contrast, offer immediate starting potential in a defence that continues to lack cohesion.
Tah himself is in no rush. “To be honest, I don’t have a timeframe,” he said after Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw with FC St Pauli. “But the club knows about it. And it’s been the same as it has been all along.”

United’s position as contenders is strategic. He is free to negotiate, available without a transfer fee, and represents the type of experience and leadership United have sorely lacked since the departure of seasoned centre-backs like Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidić.
Look, we’ve seen this film before. Solid defender becomes available, United throw their hat in the ring, only for the player to choose somewhere with better football and a clearer plan. Jonathan Tah would be a solid addition — no one’s denying that. But is this really where United should be hanging their hopes?
He’s 29. Not ancient, but not exactly one for the future. And if Real Madrid come calling with Alonso at the helm, we all know where he’s headed. Bayern too — they’re still dominant in Germany and offer Champions League football without the chaos. Even Barcelona, for all their issues, can sell a dream better than United can right now.
It’s not that Tah wouldn’t improve Man Utd— he would. But what’s the bigger plan here? Without structural change, signing a 29-year-old centre-back on a free feels like putting a plaster on a broken window.
