Manchester United are considering a move to sign Jordan Pickford from Everton with David de Gea’s future at the club uncertain.

De Gea is out of contract at the end of the season and has so far failed to agree terms on a new deal, though United have the option to extend his contract for a further season.

However, the Red Devils are deliberating whether to allow De Gea to leave on a free transfer, with the Spaniard the club’s second-highest earner behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

De Gea’s form has failed to warrant that status and there remain reservations over his ability with the ball at his feet, having struggled during the defeats to Brighton and Brentford which opened the Premier League campaign.

According to the Telegraph, Pickford has emerged as a potential target for Erik ten Hag as he considers a change of goalkeeper. The 28-year-old has made 205 appearances for Everton since joining in a £30m deal from Sunderland in 2017. He has earned 45 caps for England and will start as the Three Lions’ number one at the World Cup in Qatar this winter.

United signed Martin Dubravka from Newcastle during the summer to provide competition and cover for De Gea, while the Red Devils also have Dean Henderson on loan at Nottingham Forest.

The latter was recalled to the England squad this month after impressing at the City Ground, though Forest possess an option to make the deal permanent for a fee of £20m.
