Manchester United are ‘close’ to signing Valencia midfielder Javier Guerra this summer, according to journalist Daniel Longo.

The deal came out of nowhere but has some substance, with several outlets confirming the Red Devils’ interest in the 22-year-old.

Guerra broke out at Valencia this season, bagging three goals and three assists in 36 La Liga appearances.

He carried those terrific performances into the European U21 Championship. Guerra starred as Spain reached the final, which they lost to England.

Guerra’s blend of technique and physicality makes him a perfect fit for the Premier League. He has an eye for a goal and can create while being a neat distributor with ample room for improvement.

It looked like he was on his way to AC Milan before Man United entered the race.

While United are interested in Guerra, he is reportedly waiting to see the offer Valencia will put on the table.

It is unclear how Guerra would fit into Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 set-up, which does not allow room for a roaming number eight.

Amorim has struggled to fit Kobbie Mainoo into his tactical scheme. He could face the same issue with Guerra, who has a similar profile to Mainoo.

The Man United midfield is crying out for two number sixes, one to hold and another who can play a slightly more advanced role.

Guerra does not tick the box, and United may be forcing another square peg into a round hole.
