Manchester United are preparing themselves for a fresh attempt from AS Roma to sign centre-back Chris Smalling according to leading journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Smalling, 30, joined United ten years ago from Fulham but spent last season out on loan with Serie A side AS Roma.

The experienced defender enjoyed a hugely impressive spell with temporary club AS Roma after featuring 37 times in all competitions and was surprisingly directly involved in a respectable five goals.

Despite rejoining his parent club United at the back-end of last season after his loan spell officially expired, Smalling’s time in Manchester looks to be coming to an end.

According to leading journalist Fabrizio Romano AS Roma are plotting a new attempt to land the United centre-back.

Romano claims that talks between both clubs are ongoing with AS Roma keen to land the defender before the transfer window slams shut at the start of next month.

Speaking live on Sky Sports after United’s Carabao Cup Third Round 3-0 win against Luton Town tonight, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (as quoted by Manchester Evening News) said: “At the moment, we’ve not had any bids up to the level that we want, so that’s the situation.”
