The 16-year-old just signed his first professional contract with the Portuguese side.

Although the youngster is now on a five-year deal at Sporting, United agreed on a first-refusal option should they decide to sell. The deal is for a £14m transfer fee.

Spanish giants Atletico Madrid were also interested in the midfielder, but the midfielder he chose to stay in Lisbon.

Manchester United have had previous transfer dealings with Sporting CP.

The Red Devils notably signed a 18 year old winger named Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting CP in 2004.

He went on to score 118 goals in 292 appearances for the club, winning countless titles and the Ballon d’Or in 2008.

Ronaldo is still United’s most expensive departure, joining Real Madrid in 2009 for a, then world record fee of £80 million.

United also signed midfield superstar Bruno Fernandes in the winter of 2019 from the Portuguese side.

Gomes’s arrival would continue Man United’s youth oriented transfer tilt.

The club have recently added Amad Traore from Atlanta and Facundo Pellistri from Atletico Penarol.
