But the award of the spot-kick has proven controversial.

Two minutes and 15 seconds passed between the incident taking place and referee Paul Tierney being asked to take a look at the pitchside screen.

He ultimately opted to award the penalty, incredibly City’s first at this venue for 31 years and their first ever spot-kick awarded at Old Trafford in the Premier League, which proved a debatable call given how often such incidents occur from set-pieces.
