Manchester City are facing heaving sanctions as punishment for breaching financial rules and could be stripped of multiple Premier League titles.

The club have been hit with more than 100 charges of wrongdoing between September 2009 and the end of the 2017-18 season.

Since the breaches first occurred, City have won six Premier League titles, with current manager Pep Guardiola masterminding four of these triumphs.

But if recent rumours turn out to be true, there is a chance City could be hit with point deductions and may even have their titles taken if found to be guilty by an independent commission.

With this in mind, we’ve had a gander back at years gone by and worked out what would have to happen for other clubs to be crowned Premier League champions.

Who would be Premier League champions if City face points deductions?

While City have been by far the most dominant side in the league across the past decade, they claimed a number of their titles by the barest of margins.

The club claimed their first-ever Premier League trophy back in the 2011/12 campaign, courtesy of Sergio Aguero’s historic injury-time winner vs QPR.

Man United to be retrospectively awarded the title.

It would be a crushing blow for City to see their biggest rivals granted yet another honour and to see Sir Alex Ferguson add a 14th Premier League to his résumé.

There’s a possibility that City could lose even more titles to their Manchester rivals, considering the Red Devils finished behind them in both 2017/18 and 2020/21 campaigns.

It would take a 13-point deduction in 2017/18 for United to finish above City and would hand Jose Mourinho a fourth Premier League winners medal.

For the 2020/21 campaign, It would take a 20-point swing, but should this unlikely eventuality occur, then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be a Premier League-winning manager.

“Kick them out the league and give McFred their winners' medals.”

Remarkably, if City received a three-point deduction for their 2013/14 title win, as well as in 2018/19 and 2021/22 – then Liverpool would be crowned victors on all three occasions.

Indeed, Liverpool have been pipped to the post by City several times now, with Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip and City’s memorable fightback against Aston Villa last season still ingrained in fans’ memory.

What rules have Man City broken?

On February 6, 2023, the Premier League released a statement.

“In accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today referred a number of alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules by Manchester City Football Club (Club) to a Commission under Premier League Rule W.3.4,” their statement read.

“Commissions are independent of the Premier League and member clubs. The members of the Commission will be appointed by the independent Chair of the Premier League Judicial Panel, in accordance with Premier League Rules W.19, W.20 and W.26.

“The proceedings before the Commission will, in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82, be confidential and heard in private. Under Premier League Rule W.82.2, the Commission’s final award will be published on the Premier League’s website.

“This confirmation is made in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1. The Premier League will be making no further comment in respect of this matter until further notice.”

In response, City stated that they would ‘welcome’ the review of the charges but insisted they were ‘surprised’ by the allegations.
