Manchester City are keen to add a new midfielder to their ranks, and could do so during the January transfer window.
According to the Evening Standard, Wolves midfielder Rúben Neves and Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong top Pep Guardiola’s wish-list of potential targets, while Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele is also on the Premier League champions’ radar.
Fernandinho will be 34 in May and Guardiola believes the acquisition of a long-term successor to the Brazilian should be the club’s top priority.
And it seems the Catalan coach is so happy with his squad that he only intends to sign one new first-team player in the next two transfer windows.
That means they could move for somebody in January or wait until the summer if landing their target mid-way through the season proves too difficult.
Last January, City very nearly signed Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk only to pull out of the deal when Leroy Sané got injured and signing a new forward player took priority. In the end they got neither, and Fred ended up joining rivals Manchester United in the summer.
There was also the Jorginho saga, which culminated with the Italian international opting to join Chelsea and leaving City light in midfield heading into the new season.
Portugal international Neves has impressed with his performances for newly promoted Wolves this season, and the 21-year-old is valued at around £60m.
Ndombele, on the other hand, would be a slightly cheaper option and would probably be available at around £40m. The 21-year-old French international is understood to have caught Guardiola’s eye when Lyon beat City in the Champions League earlier this season, and he will get another look at him when the two sides meet again later this month.
And if City want to sign De Jong – who is also 21 – they are likely to face stiff competition from Barcelona and possibly a host of other European clubs.
The Dutch international had a brilliant game when the Netherlands beat France in the UEFA Nations League on Friday, and his signature is unlikely to come cheaply.
