Missing out on signing Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo could be the catalyst for Manchester City being beaten to the Premier League title this season, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

What happened during the summer?

City boss Pep Guardiola went into the transfer window looking to strengthen his squad by welcoming Kane and Jack Grealish to the Etihad Stadium.

While the reigning Premier League champions were able to sign Grealish for a British transfer record fee of £100million from Aston Villa, Kane proved to be more difficult to prise away from Tottenham Hotspur.

The England captain publicly confirmed he wanted to leave Spurs after growing frustrated at a lack of silverware and Guardiola admitted the striker was on his wishlist.

But City failed to strike a deal with Spurs and, days before the window closed at the end of last month, Kane took to social media to reveal he would be remaining in north London.

departure for Barcelona by signing Ronaldo.

However, the 36-year-old sealed his return to arch-rivals Manchester United instead.

What has Dean Jones said about the situation?

With cross-city rivals signing Ronaldo and fellow title challengers Chelsea forking out a club record fee to welcome Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge, Jones believes Guardiola's charges could miss out on sealing back-to-back Premier League crowns.

He told GMS: "Obviously, they missed out on the one big thing they needed.

"It's perfectly plausible that they could still go on and win the Premier League but they don't have a number nine and that's what they set out to get - Kane and Grealish - since March. They didn't do it and they didn't have a back-up either.

"They went for Ronaldo late on and not only failing to get him but seeing him join their rivals is not great.

"I think it adds a really intriguing layer to the season, to be honest. If they do suddenly struggle for goals and go on a bad run, it's all going to be thrown back at them.

"These margins are so small that if they lose track of Chelsea for a few weeks, they could get away from them."

Have City struggled in front of goal this season?

In short, no. They may have drawn a blank in the goalless stalemate against Southampton at the weekend and during the opening day defeat to Spurs, but City found the back of the net 11 times in the three Premier League fixtures in between.

They also hit RB Leipzig for six in their Champions League opener last week.
