The match was a fiercely contested one, which saw a number of controversial moments in the second half in particular.

The temperature of the game rose considerably after City's Phil Foden saw a goal ruled out by VAR following an Erling Haaland shirt-pull on Fabinho in the build-up and only increased from then on.

Salah and Bernardo Silva repeatedly clashed throughout the 90 minutes, with footage emerging after the match of the Man City star appearing to kick out at the Reds' star.

Silva's conduct towards Salah infuriated Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp so much that the German charged down the touchline to aggressively protest to officials.

That didn't go down well with the men in charge and Klopp was ultimately shown a red card by referee Anthony Taylor.

Unfortunately, the notable incidents weren't confined to the Anfield pitch, though.

Reports of unsavoury behaviour in the stands emerged when City boss Pep Guardiola revealed that he had coins thrown at him by Liverpool supporters after Foden's goal was disallowed.

In his post-match press conference, Guardiola joked: "Next time they [Liverpool fans] will do it better. They didn't get me. They tried but didn't get me. They got it on the coach years ago but not this time.'"

The previous incidents that Guardiola spoke of involved the City team bus being pelted with missiles before matches at Liverpool in both 2014 and 2018.

Regrettably, per the Manchester Evening News, City's bus was once again targeted as the visitors left Anfield on Sunday evening.

BBC Sport journalist Mike Minay tweeted out a photo showing the cracked windscreen that was allegedly caused by Liverpool fans, which you can see below.

Minay also confirmed that City and readying an official complaint to the Football Association over Guardiola's treatment and the damage to their bus.

Prior to any action from league chiefs, Liverpool have already vowed to issue lifetime bans to any supporters found to have thrown coins at Guardiola.

For their part, City have condemned the behaviour of some of their fans who were involved in 'vile chanting' and vandalism of the away end during Sunday's match.

Having gone head-to-head for the Premier League title over the past few seasons, the rivalry between Liverpool and City has become one of the keenest in the top-flight.

After an enthralling - if ill-tempered encounter - it's a huge shame that matters off the field dominate the post-match headlines.
