Man City youngster Rico Lewis has named the position he would like to play above all else after playing a key role in the team’s win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The 19-year-old put the Premier League champions ahead early on in the second half following Jean-Philippe Mateta’s opener and Kevin De Bruyne’s stunning equaliser.

Erling Haaland scored Man City‘s third before De Bruyne netted his 100th goal for the club. Odsonne Edouard struck home late on to make it 4-2.

“It’s a very difficult place to come,” Lewis told TNT Sports. “The fans that travel every week, we thank them so much because it means so much. To get the win is amazing.

“The main message was to keep on going. The chances would come. We needed to get into the box and that’s what we did.

“As a kid you dream of scoring a goal and celebrating. I want to get more goals and assists.”

Lewis has predominantly played as a right-back and briefly as a left-back  for Man City, but Pep Guardiola put him in midfield after dropping Phil Foden. The teenager says that’s the position he prefers to play in.

“I don’t know but I enjoy playing midfield the most. I want to contribute but the manager decides where I’m most effective,” he said.

The victory sees Man City leapfrog Arsenal in the Premier League table, at least temporarily, and go level with leaders Liverpool on 70 points.

“It’s just like every other title race,” Lewis insisted. “We have to win every game. There’s three teams in it and we have to be the strongest team.”

Guardiola was impressed by the young player’s performance in midfield after handing him a surprise start.

“He is an exceptional player,” he said. “He is really good in the pockets. He has a sense for goal. He is another academy player so that is really good for us.
