Sergio Aguero is in line to earn himself a one-year contract extension at Manchester City, according to the latest reports from England, however could be offered around half his current wage at the Etihad Stadium.

The Argentine’s deal is currently set to expire in June, and amid uncertainty around whether he would put pen to paper on a new deal under Pep Guardiola, has been linked with a number of high-profile moves to some of Europe’s leading clubs in recent weeks.

There had been suggestions that Sergio Aguero was the top priority for Mauricio Pochettino at PSG, should he become a free agent in the summer. While reliable sources in Spain claimed that Barcelona would also be tempest with a move for the Argentina superstar – although given the Catalan club’s ongoing financial struggles, a deal for Aguero seemed far fetched.

According to an exclusive report from the Daily Star, Sergio Aguero is ‘in line‘ for a new one-year contract at Manchester City. However, despite being reportedly ‘keen‘ to extend his contract at the Etihad Stadium beyond June, it is claimed that City are likely to offer the 32-year-old around half his current salary of £250,000 a week.

A slightly contrasting report from the Mirror on Saturday night claimed that Manchester City officials have in fact told Sergio Aguero that he needs to prove he is ‘fully recovered‘ before they decide on whether to offer him a new deal at the club. This seems like the more likely scenario at the present moment.

There had been a feeling in some corners that any potential deal for Lionel Messi, who is reported to have remained uncertain and in some reports unhappy at his current situation at Barcelona, would rely heavily on the presence of Sergio Aguero.

This possibly explains why there had been some connections linking Aguero with PSG – who are reported to be Manchester City’s main competition for Messi, should he pursue his desire to leave the Camp Nou in the summer.

A new deal for Aguero may also shut down any reports linking City with a move for a new striker in the summer, with links to the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Erling Haaland being rife over the past few months.
