Manchester City are preparing to offer Erling Haaland a new contract after the release clause in his current deal was removed.
That’s according to The Athletic’s Sam Lee, who reports on Wednesday that a clause in Haaland’s contract that would have permitted him to leave City for £150m in the summer of 2024 was specifically linked to Pep Guardiola’s future at the club.
And when Guardiola opted to extend his own contract back in November, the release clause in Haaland’s deal was automatically cancelled.
The Premier League champions are reportedly now hoping to extend Haaland’s contract, which is currently set to expire in June 2027, and there is said to be belief that the Norwegian striker is open to talks.
Haaland has so far scored 47 goals in 40 matches since joining City from Borussia Dortmund last summer, and the 22-year-old is understood to be extremely happy at the Etihad Stadium.
Rumours linking him with the likes of Real Madrid will never be too far away, but it would undoubtedly be a big statement if City could get the prolific striker locked into a new deal without a release clause.
