Man City are still under investigation for financial fair play misconduct and could face a points deduction as a result.

That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after the Daily Mail reported the ongoing investigation.

City were banned from European competition for two seasons in 2019 after they were found to have misled Uefa over FFP.

They lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport and ultimately had the ban rescinded.

But it has now come to light that the Premier League have, in secret, continued to investigate supposed irregularities in the club’s finances.

And Maguire claims that City could be slapped with a fine or face a points deduction if wrongdoing is detected.

“I don’t see how it would necessarily impact in terms of European qualification as it did last time,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Wiliams.

“The Premier league sanctions could be financial. It could also be a points deduction, which would likely leave them still in the top four.

“The Premier League investigation clearly has carried on for some time. I think Man City are taking the view that they feel the Premier League is asking too much in terms of data it requires.

“They are just protecting their interests. I think the Premier League is under pressure itself from other teams that are resentful towards Man City.

“That seems to be consistent with the Premier League’s approach towards the Newcastle takeover as well.”

City are just one result away from mathematically securing the Premier League title.

They are also through to the final of the Champions League, where they will face Chelsea on 29 May.
