Bayern Munich made no secret of their desire to sign Leroy Sané from Manchester City in the summer.

But the City were actually hoping the Bundesliga giants would take Gabriel Jesus off their hands instead.

At least, that’s according to a report from German outlet Sport Bild on Wednesday, who claim City offered Jesus to Bayern for €100m.

But the Bavarians only wanted to sign Sané, and they might well have done so if the winger hadn’t picked up an unfortunate anterior cruciate ligament injury in August’s Community Shield.

That injury will keep the German winger sidelined until well into the New Year, but Sport Bild say he is still top of their shopping list and they could reignite their interest when the transfer window re-opens on 1 January.

City were said to be demanding €150m to sell Sané in the summer but with his contract set to expire in 2021, that fee is likely to decrease as time goes on.

Sport Bild suggest Pep Guardiola’s side may also be forced to sell the 23-year-old in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Speaking to the Planet Fútbol podcast last week, Bayern president Uli Hoeness revealed how close they came to signing the former Schalke man.

“We were very much interested. We had discussions with him, but his big accident, awful injury – we could not go on with that,” said Hoeness.

“Therefore, we have to wait now [and see] how his recovery goes on.

“I think the new leaders will have to sit down in January or February [and decide] what’s going on with that.”
