Burnley set to sign James Trafford.

Man City have reportedly negotiated a ‘buy-back clause’ in their deal with Premier League rivals Burnley for goalkeeper James Trafford.

The 20-year-old spent the 2022/23 season on loan in League 1 with Bolton Wanderers.

He enjoyed a remarkable campaign for the third tier outfit as he kept 26 clean sheets in his 52 appearances across all competitions.

This summer, Trafford made a name for himself at the U21 European Championships. The youngster did not concede a single goal as England progressed to the final and won the tournament.

Trafford has been heavily linked with Burnley, who are in the market for a new goalkeeper following their return to the Premier League.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is reporting that ‘Trafford has already completed medical tests’ ahead of his move to Burnley. He is understood to cost them an initial £14m (plus £5m extra in potential add-ons).

Romano has also pointed out that ‘Man City‘s buy-back clause is triple the fee Burnley are paying for Trafford’ (which equates to at least £42m).

Burnley have already signed five players ahead of next season. Zeki Amdouni has joined Lawrence Vigouroux, Dara O’Shea, Michael Obafemi and Jordan Beyer in moving to Turf Moor.

Amdouni – who has cost Burnley a reported €18m –  has penned a five-year deal after he grabbed 22 goals and five assists in his 52 appearances for FC Basel last season across all competitions.

The Switzerland international is “confident” that he will be able to “do good things” at Burnley.

“I’m very happy to be here and I’m excited to start,” Amdouni said (via Burnley’s official website).

“The last two months were very important to me; I spoke to the coach, and he really wanted me. Also, I really wanted to work with him, for me that’s the most important. For my career, to choose a good club, where the coach wants you is important to me.

“I know the Premier League is best league in the world. It’s not easy for sure but I am confident with the coach, and the staff, I can do good things here.”

Head coach Vincent Kompany added: “He’s been on our radar for quite a while now.

“Zeki is such a goal threat. The way he can play the final pass creates so many assists and thanks to the amount of work he puts in on the pitch – he scores plenty himself.

“We’re looking forward to working with him. He’s a big talent.”
