Manchester City beat Manchester United on penalties to win the Community Shield in a game which provided an interesting look into how prepared the two teams are for the season ahead.
Substitute Alejandro Garnacho looked to have won it for United before a late equaliser from Bernardo Silva took the game to spot kicks.
Here is five things we learned from the clash…
Doku was always a great watch last season and his talent has never been in question. His consistency however was a different matter and fans were frustrated at times by what they saw. He ended the league season on three goals and eight assists but there is definitely more to come. He enjoyed success against Diego Dalot today and in his second season under Pep Guardiola he will be looking to improve.
Diallo was only given three league starts last campaign even though fans were clamouring to see him more. He scored the vital goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup but even after that, his playing time was limited. He was a bright spark for United today and with Antony failing to deliver last campaign and the uncertainty surrounding Jadon Sancho, there is no reason why Diallo should not be on the pitch more often.
James Mcatee, Nico O’Reilly, Oscar Bobb and Rico Lewis all put in impressive displays and showed Guardiola that they are more than capable of playing at this level. As the season progresses and with the heavy workload, it would be no surprise to see them all featuring regularly. Bobb in particular was excellent and looks primed for a bigger role this campaign.
Towards the end of last season Casemiro looked like his career playing at the top level was nearing the end. Particular performances such as the 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace were hugely scrutinised and it looked a doubt as to whether the Brazilian would be at Old Trafford this season. He put in a solid display today, however, and amid rumours that United are looking at signing a CDM, he did his case no harm.
Mount had a season plagued by injuries last campaign and could not make the impact he would have wanted. Today he struggled to get involved and it was a disappointing showing. The Englishman needs a big season ahead to revitalise his career and change the narrative but might need time to get back up to speed again.
