Several City stars could return this weekend
Manchester City were down several stars in their opening match of the 2025-26 Premier League season, with Rodri, Phil Foden and Ederson among the absentees for Pep Guardiola.
City did not look like they missed the sidelined group much as they left Molineux with three points from a resounding 4-0 win over Wolves last Saturday evening.
But if his team are to push for a seventh league title in the space of nine campaigns, Guardiola will need to have a fully fit squad at his disposal.
Will any players currently on City’s injury list return this weekend? Here’s what we know...
After missing the majority of last season with an ACL injury, the Spanish midfielder suffered another setback at the Club World Cup, with Guardiola revealing that the Ballon d’Or winner had sustained a “big injury” in City’s defeat to Al-Hilal.
Rodri watched City’s opening day victory at Wolves from the stands and is expected to play only a minimal role before the September international break.
There were no immediate updates from Guardiola after full-time in that match, but the City boss said before the season opener that he hopes Rodri will be “really fit... hopefully after the international break”.
He added: "Hopefully in these games, he can play some minutes, but what is important is that he doesn't have pain because we don't want him coming back injured. We will try desperately to avoid that."
Before the international break at the beginning of September, City take on Tottenham at home and face Brighton away.
It’s therefore possible that Rodri is involved in north London, even if a substitute appearance is more likely than a starting line-up berth.

Guardiola hoped to have his former PFA Player of the Year winner back for the visit to the Black Country, after Foden missed out on City’s pre-season trip to Palermo the week prior with an ankle niggle.
“Phil was doing really good but he had a problem with a knock on his ankle that’s why as a precaution we did it,” Guardiola explained before the Wolves match.
That didn’t happen, with the England international absent from the matchday squad and instead watching from the stands at Molineux alongside Rodri.
Still, his presence in the Midlands suggests that ankle issue isn’t bad enough to keep him from moving about, so we could see Foden back in action against Spurs next weekend. We’ll likely hear from Guardiola during the week, so stay tuned for updates!

City’s long-time No1 goalkeeper was completely absent from the trip to Molineux on Saturday, with a bout of gastroenteritis the reason given by the club.
His omission from the squad comes, however, amid ongoing transfer rumours linking the Brazilian shot-stopper to Turkish giants Galatasaray, who are understood to have made an opening bid of €10m for him.
Fabrizio Romano reported last Saturday that Ederson wants to leave the north-west, with “advanced talks” apparently underway between City and Galatasaray and the Manchester club said to be demanding more for their ‘keeper.

James Trafford enjoyed a solid debut in his absence, with usual deputy Stefan Ortega on the bench, and wantaway Paris Saint-Germain goalie Gianluigi Donnarumma has also been linked with a move to the Etihad in recent days.
If gastroenteritis was all that kept Ederson from featuring against Wolves, we’d expect him to be back between the posts for the visit of Spurs this weekend. But any developments in the transfer market this week will reveal if there is indeed more to the situation than City have wanted us to believe.

The Brazilian winger was revealed last Friday to have picked up an injury against Palermo in pre-season, and was subsequently ruled out by Guardiola for “a few weeks”.
He may return before the end of August, in which case the visit of Tottenham or trip to Brighton could mark the 21-year-old’s first league appearance of the campaign, but Savinho might also remain out until after the September international break, when City host a Manchester derby.
All that assumes he’s still a City player past transfer deadline day, of course, with this weekend’s opponents Spurs understood to be pursuing a deal despite Guardiola’s wishes that Savinho remains at the Etihad for “many, many years”.
The Croatian missed the Club World Cup campaign entirely after having surgery on an Achilles problem.
He’s likely to be a longer-term absentee than the others, with Guardiola saying this ahead of the start of the season: “We have three [defensive midfielders], I would say, with Kova injured until September or October - hopefully earlier.”
Another Club World Cup casualty, Argentine midfielder Claudio Echeverri was also ruled out for a number of weeks.
The 19-year-old joined the Sky Blues back in January, making a handful of appearances last season, but missed the remainder of City’s campaign over in the United States this summer after scoring a free-kick in a 6-0 win over Al-Ain.
Echeverri turned his ankle in training back then, with Guardiola revealing in June that he would be out for “two or three weeks”. He wasn’t in the matchday squad at Wolves, but may return against Spurs.
