Manchester City have suffered a concerning new injury blow during a thrilling Premier League title run-in.

Pep Guardiola’s side remain the favourites to win their fourth consecutive top-flight championship and a sixth in the last seven years, currently sitting second and a point behind leaders Arsenal but with a potentially crucial game in hand still to come.

City followed Arsenal’s thrilling and controversial north London derby win over Tottenham on Sunday with a 2-0 victory at relegation-battling Nottingham Forest, with Erling Haaland scoring on his return from injury off the bench at the City Ground to add to Josko Gvardiol’s first-half effort.

However, Guardiola now has fresh fitness worries over first-choice goalkeeper Ederson, while two more key players also missed the win over Forest.

Ederson

The Brazilian appeared to hurt his shoulder during a painful first-half clash with Forest defender Willy Boly, receiving treatment and being replaced by deputy Stefan Ortega at half-time.

Ederson was later spotted leaving the City Ground with his arm in a sling and Guardiola offered a pessimistic update when quizzed about the issue after the game.

“It doesn't look good. We see tomorrow with the doctor,” the City boss said.

Sunday had been just Ederson’s fourth appearance since returning from a thigh injury sustained in the pulsating 1-1 draw at title rivals Liverpool in March that saw him sidelined for a month.

In his absence, Ortega will reassume starting duties, backed up by third-choice veteran Scott Carson.

Phil Foden

Before Ederson’s latest injury and Haaland’s eagerly-awaited return aside, the biggest team news line of the day from a City perspective at Forest was the absence of Foden.

The England playmaker has been the defending champions’ best player so far this term, scoring 24 goals and registering 10 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions.

Foden did initially make the trip to Forest, but was sent back ahead of the game having not recovered from illness in time to be named in the matchday squad.

"He's not ready. He's ill,” Guardiola said. “He didn't feel good, discomfort today and he's back to Manchester.

“It is what it is. It's a long season - they always happen these kind of things - and another one is going to play."

With holders City not in Champions League semi-final action, Foden now has a full week to recover before Guardiola’s men return to action at home to Wolves at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
