Huddersfield Town were promoted in the most unlikely circumstances to the Premier League in 2017, with Aaron Mooy becoming a key player in that team.

Seven years ago, Huddersfield managed to achieve promotion to the top flight, defying expectations having never even finished in the top half of the Championship table in the four seasons prior.

David Wagner came into the club in November 2015 and managed to take Huddersfield to the Premier League, having signed 13 players in the summer transfer window in 2016.

He brought over a number of players from his native Germany, including the likes of Chris Lowe, Michal Hefele, Elias Kachunga and Christopher Schindler, who all impressed.

But the player who arguably impressed the most out of their summer signings was Australian midfielder Mooy, who joined on loan from Manchester City.

Aaron Mooy was a major part of Huddersfield’s promotion campaign

Mooy had arrived at Huddersfield as a fairly unknown player to many in England, having spent the previous four seasons in his home nation.

He had excelled in his final season at Melbourne City, scoring 11 goals and getting 21 assists.

This led to a move to Melbourne’s sister club, and now European champions, Manchester City. But in what was a strange set of circumstances, he was almost immediately loaned to Huddersfield, joining six days later.

Mooy would make a near-instant impact at the John Smith's Stadium. His first goal for the club would be a crucial one in a West Yorkshire derby against Leeds United, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win at Elland Road.

He would go on to score other goals against Wigan Athletic, Newcastle United and Norwich City, whilst also getting seven assists. The Terriers would end the season in fifth place, reaching the play-offs.

After a dramatic penalty shootout win over Sheffield Wednesday in the semi-finals, they faced Reading at Wembley, with a win securing promotion to the Premier League for the first time.

They would manage to do it, winning once again on penalties, with Mooy scoring one of the penalties to win promotion. He would also win the club’s Player of the Year award.

Mooy continued his importance to the team in the Premier League

Upon their first season in the Premier League, many expected them to be relegated straight back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Mooy was one of the first signings that Huddersfield made, signing him on a permanent deal for a reported £8 million, rising to £10 million.

They started the season well, winning their first two games, with the second being a 1-0 win over Newcastle - with Mooy scoring the only goal.

Huddersfield would go on to stay up, with Mooy ending the season with four goals. He would score the first in a 2-1 win over Manchester United, and a brace in a 4-1 win over Watford.

The Terriers then unfortunately suffered relegation back to the Championship in just their second season. Mooy suffered a knee injury that kept him out for two months midway through the season, but failed to make much of an impact upon his return.

They would equal the Premier League record for the earliest relegation, going on to finish bottom of the league with a mere 16 points, only winning three games all season.

Mooy would then depart for Brighton, before playing for Shanghai Port and Celtic, and then retiring in 2023 after helping Celtic win a domestic treble.

Whilst his time at Huddersfield did not end well, their promotion and survival the following season will live long in the memory, and Mooy will also be remembered for his large contribution across those two amazing seasons for the club.
