Steven Gerrard did his upmost to hand the Premier League title to his beloved Liverpool.

In what always promised to be a thrilling conclusion to the English top-flight season on Sunday night, the Reds legend had it within his ability to put the title on a plate for his former employers.

And boy did the Aston Villa manager give it his best shot: propelling his side into an astonishing 2-0 lead at the Etihad Stadium to leave the door ajar for Liverpool to become kings of England.

Man City beat Liverpool to the title

You can picture the fairytale narrative in your head right now as Gerrard celebrates victory over Pep Guardiola in his final game of the season and even toasts Liverpool winning the league to boot.

But alas, not only did Liverpool never actually take the lead against Wolverhampton Wanderers while Villa were in charge, but the Citizens romped their way to an astonishing comeback.

Sadio Mane scored the fastest ever Premier League hat-trick, how quick was it?

As soon as Ilkay Gundogan pulled a goal back for the reigning champions in the 76th minute, you got the feeling that the floodgates might open – and open they did.

Guardiola’s men smashed three goals past the Birmingham club in the space of just five minutes to render Liverpool’s late strikes from Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson immaterial.

It was a breath-taking turnaround that wrapped up Premier League glory for City and ensured that there would be plenty of jokes at Gerrard’s expense for having let Villa’s two-goal lead slip.

Man City fans mock Gerrard

And rest assured that the Etihad faithful made the most of the Gerrard narrative as they could be heard chanting about the former England and Liverpool star once the final whistle blew.

Reporter Miguel Delaney confirmed in the aftermath of City’s triumph: “The entire stadium – most of whom are on the City pitch – singing the Steven Gerrard Demba Ba song.”

Yes, that is indeed the chant about Gerrard’s infamous slip against Chelsea in 2014 that cost Liverpool the Premier League title with City fans clearly insinuating that the same had happened again.

Videos quickly confirmed that City supporters were chanting the rather unsubtle lyrics of: “Steve Gerrard Gerrard, He slips on his f***ing arse, He gave it to Demba Ba, Steve Gerrard Gerrard.”

Ouch, that’s got to hurt

If that doesn’t rub salt in the wounds of Liverpool fans, then we don’t know what will, because nicking the Premier League title and then mocking a club legend is quite the double whammy.

And truth be told, even though Villa did indeed throw away a 2-0 lead at the Etihad, it can’t help feeling harsh that Gerrard is being mocked for having ‘slipped up’ again all things considered.

Lest we forget that Tottenham Hotspur are the only team to beat City in the league since October, so the fact that Villa even raced into a 2-0 lead in the first place should frankly be applauded.

So, while it’s probably inevitable that City fans wanted to crack a joke at Gerrard and Liverpool’s expense, the Villa boss can hold his head high for even making the title race’s final day a proper contest.
