Pep Guardiola will not be on the touchline when his Manchester City side take on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Guardiola picked up his third yellow card of the season in Wednesday’s EFL Cup defeat at Newcastle and according to Jacqui Oatley, the 52-year-old must now serve a one-match touchline ban.

The threshold for a ban was previously four yellow cards, but the rule has changed this season to three in a bid to reduce dissent from the technical areas.

Guardiola is now expected to watch Saturday’s match unfold from the directors’ box at Molineux, with his assistant Juanma Lillo handed the responsibility of managing from the touchline.

City have already won two matches without their manager this season. Before the last international break, they beat Fulham and home and Sheffield United away while Guardiola was recuperating from surgery on his back.
