De Bruyne said: "I am very happy. I had not personally thought he would come back after what happened to him. But I'm happy if he's happy to be able to play again.

"I do not know how I would have reacted if I had had that experience. Would I stop or not? But if he wants to play and can do it without risks, then I am very happy on his behalf.

"That's what he loves to do, and it's hard to imagine what his family and wife, who were there when it happened, were going through at that time. I also talked to my wife about it and how we would do. But I'm really happy on his behalf."
