Mamelodi Sundowns announces the departure of two first-team players
According to recent press reports, two Mamelodi Sundowns first-team midfielders who played a key role in the team's renaissance over the past few seasons are no longer in Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso's plans for the upcoming season.
30-year-old attacking midfielder Lebohang Maboe and fellow central midfielder Rivaldo Coetzee, also 28, are the two players leaving Mamelodi Sundowns this week.
The two players are no longer in the club's plans for next season, as indicated by press reports, although coach Miguel Cardoso, the club said in an official statement on its official X account: “After seven memorable years, 12 trophies, 183 appearances and that unforgettable league winning hat-trick, the Yellow Nation bids farewell to Lebohang Maboe”.
The Brazilians have extended their heartfelt wishes to Rivaldo Coetzee and Lebohang Maboe as they prepare for the next phase of their careers.
Coetzee, a stalwart in Sundowns' defense, leaves the club after an illustrious tenure that saw him lift an impressive 14 trophies and make over 130 appearances. Affectionately known as part of the "Yellow Nation," the Namibian international has been a vital figure in the team’s success over the years. However, with his contract expiring on June 30 and limited playing time following a lengthy injury layoff, both parties have mutually agreed to part ways. The club expressed gratitude for his contributions and wished him success in his future endeavors.
Meanwhile, attacking midfielder Lebohang Maboe has also been released after spending the latter half of last season on loan at SuperSport United, where he featured in 13 league matches and two cup games. Having joined Sundowns from Maritzburg United, Maboe was a key contributor in previous campaigns, but the club has now decided to let him seek opportunities elsewhere.
As both players turn the page, Masandawana fans will remember their impact fondly while anticipating new additions to the squad ahead of the upcoming season.
