FLW's Notts County fan pundit has given his reaction to speculation linking Tobias Solberg and Adam Hinshelwood with the Meadow Lane vacancy.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Notts County are still on the hunt for a new head coach after parting company with Stuart Maynard last month.
Notts County spent much of last season in automatic promotion contention, but they missed out on a place in the top three on the final day of the campaign, and they suffered further heartbreak as they were beaten 2-0 by AFC Wimbledon in their play-off semi-final.
The loss to the Dons marked the end of Maynard's 16-month tenure at Meadow Lane, with owners Christoffer and Alexander Reedtz admitting that "neither results nor performances reached the levels we believe the team was capable of", particularly during the "defining period" towards the end of the season.
Despite not having a head coach in place, the Magpies have been busy in the transfer market, with midfielder Tom Iorpenda joining on loan from Huddersfield Town and striker Matthew Dennis arriving from Carlisle United, and they are also closing in on the signing of Blackpool midfielder Ollie Norburn on a free transfer, as exclusively revealed by FLW on Friday.
However, while Notts' recruitment drive continues to gather pace, progress has been slower on the search for Maynard's replacement, and after previous talk that Jack Wilshere or Joao Alves could be set to take over at the club, Tobias Solberg and Adam Hinshelwood are the latest names to feature high on the bookies' odds list.
Solberg's last managerial role came with Swedish side Degerfors IF, while Hinshelwood is currently in charge of York City, who he led to a second-placed finish in the National League last season before they were beaten 3-0 by Oldham Athletic in their play-off eliminator.
There were reports that Hinshelwood's position at the LNER Community Stadium was under threat after missing out on promotion, but that was swiftly denied by the Minstermen, and the 41-year-old is currently leading their preparations for the new season.
When asked for his thoughts on the potential appointment of Solberg or Hinshelwood, FLW's Notts County fan pundit Gareth Parr questioned whether the club's existing squad is suited to either of their respective styles of play, and he suggested the Reedtz brothers may now be looking to take the Magpies in a different direction.
"Solberg and Hinshelwood are interesting choices," Gareth said.
"Solberg obviously has the Scandinavian connection with the owners, but both of them bring a very different way of playing to the way Notts normally play.
"They are not possession-based, they have more of an attacking, high-press style of play, which makes you wonder whether the personnel the club have fit into those styles.
"While it's a style of play that would please the crowd, I don't know whether it would actually fit in with the owners' philosophy.
"Maybe the owners are looking at an alternative style of play for the club now.
"Maybe they have looked at the possession-based style of play and identified that it isn't working at League Two level, so they want more of a generic, win a game at all costs kind of style.
"I think the number of random names that have been thrown about is just bookmakers trying to generate some income.
"When a new name hits the list, do they think it is just something that people will throw money at?
"I still think the names that get thrown out there by the bookmakers need to be taken with a large pinch of salt.
"It was mentioned in one of the recent Notts press releases about the appointment of a new team doctor that they know who the new coaching team are, but they just haven't been announced yet."
Gareth is right that neither Solberg nor Hinshelwood's preferred style of play would be a natural fit for the current Notts County squad, but a different approach may not be a bad thing after two failed promotion attempts.
Few Magpies supporters will be aware of Solberg, which makes him a potentially risky choice, but Hinshelwood has done an outstanding job at York, transforming them from relegation battlers to promotion contenders, and his appointment would continue the club's trend of giving young, up-and-coming coaches a chance.
The Minstermen may have fallen short of promotion, but after building a formidable team that accumulated an impressive total of 96 points, Hinshelwood has earned the opportunity to make the step up to the EFL, and he may be able to bring Ollie Pearce, who was the top scorer in the National League last season with 29 goals, with him to Meadow Lane to replace the departing David McGoldrick.
