Bristol Rovers owner Hussain AlSaeed appears to have won some supporters over, but he’ll be under plenty of focus over the summer
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Bristol Rovers owner Hussain AlSaeed is still relatively new on his club ownership journey but has been praised for his actions already by parts of the fanbase.
On the pitch, it hasn’t been the most comfortable ride for the Gas, hovering just above the relegation zone in League One.
But a busy season in the transfer market, coupled with a fan-involved overhaul of ticket prices, has left some with a sense that the new decision-makers are heading in the right direction.
We asked our Bristol Rovers Fan Pundit, Ziggy, for one message he’d like to send to the current club owners.
Speaking to Football League World, Ziggy said: “The message I would send to our owners is to make sure we strengthen the positions we’re weaker in and try to keep our stronger players that we have.
“They've had their season to gel now with almost 16 signings last season and a few in January, I feel like we have that base that we want now, where we can kind of push on, we've got rid of a lot of people last season, brought a lot of people in and that should be the base, I think.
“Turning around the squad again, which I don't think they'll do, but just to make sure that we strengthen the positions, keep our stronger players.
“It's clear, although this is their first ownership of a football club, they do seem quite experienced, so I think having their money and going, ‘oh, we're gonna spend a lot of money’, which is what they did but start, it obviously excites fans, but you do have to spend it well, so I'm hoping that they do that.
“More recently, though, after criticism from last season, I feel like they will listen to fans a lot more.
“They've proven in this last week, really, when last season when season tickets were announced, there was massive uproar from fans about prices and what they'd done.
“However, this season they've just announced it and they've very clearly listened to fans and done whatever they can to get family tickets and everything like that.
“So, I feel like they will listen to fans and they'll know what they're doing. So I have a lot more trust in them after this season’s season tickets released, and I'm hoping that in the summer they will choose in right positions to strengthen in.”
As Ziggy states, throwing a load of new players together in a dressing room, added together with a mid-season manager change, is bound to take some time to settle down.
And important recent wins against Peterborough United and Burton Albion, both currently directly below them in the table, plus a well-fought draw against play-off contenders Stockport County, shows that settling down may just be around the corner.
A summer of consolidation, keeping as much as the dressing room together, along with quality, targeted additions, should produce a much stronger Bristol Rovers for the start of next season.
In the meantime, fan involvement with ticket prices is a surefire way to get a bit of buy-in from fans, while the picture is not especially exciting on the pitch.
