Barcelona’s hopes of strengthening their defence ahead of next season have taken a significant hit.

According to a recent report from Mario Cortegana in The Athletic, top defensive target Jonathan Tah is now in advanced talks to join Bayern Munich as a free agent, casting serious doubt on a potential move to the Catalan club.

The 29-year-old Germany international is out of contract this summer, having already confirmed in April that he would not renew with Bayer Leverkusen.

Barcelona had previously reached a verbal agreement with Tah regarding a switch, and with Hansi Flick as manager, there was optimism that the former Germany coach could convince the defender to follow him. However, that hope appears to be fading.

Bayern Munich have upped the ante

Interestingly, Tah is reportedly closing in on a three-year deal with Bayern Munich, with the option for a further year.

Bayern’s interest is longstanding, as they had shown interest in signing him last summer, but Leverkusen’s €30 million price tag back then prevented the move.

Now, with Tah available on a free transfer and with Eric Dier to leave for AS Monaco, Bayern are eager to act swiftly and secure his services without delay.

Barcelona’s pursuit of the experienced centre-back was driven by their urgent need for depth and leadership in the defensive line.

Despite emerging talents like Pau Cubarsi and the steady presence of Ronald Araujo and Inigo Martinez, the Blaugrana have long recognised the need to add a proven, physically dominant figure at the back.

Tah, with his tall frame, aerial presence, and calm under pressure, seemed like an ideal candidate, especially given his cost-free availability.

For Barcelona, the latest development is a painful reminder of the club’s current limitations in the transfer market.

Financial constraints and delays in closing deals continue to haunt the sporting management, allowing wealthier or more stable clubs, like Bayern Munich, to swoop in and close negotiations with greater urgency.

Though nothing has been officially confirmed yet, all signs now point to Tah donning Bayern colours next season.
