Chelsea struggled to convince any of their players to join Everton as part of their deal to try to sign midfielder Amadou Onana this month.

With less than a week to go until the January transfer window closes, Chelsea are still look to add to the six signings already made which have bolstered Graham Potter‘s squad for the second half of the season.

A right wing-back and central midfielder are being targeted before Tuesday’s transfer deadline, with Lyon’s Malo Gusto being eyed to offer competition and cover for Reece James.

Several midfielders have been shortlisted. Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez and Brighton & Hove Albion star Moises Caicedo are at the top of Chelsea’s list, but the Blues have drawn up a list of alternative targets.

Onana, 21, has emerged as one of those in recent days and Chelsea have made contact with the midfielder as they look to take advantage of relegation-threatened Everton, who sacked head coach Frank Lampard earlier this week.

It was previously reported in France that Onana rejected a move to Stamford Bridge this month, having only joined from LOSC Lille last summer, with the player wanting to remain at Goodison Park.

Now Daily Telegraph report the deal Chelsea tried to offer Everton to acquire Onana, who they are yet to convince to want to move down to the capital.

It’s claimed ‘Chelsea were prepared to offer a number of players on loan to Everton as part of a bid to sign Onana this month, but, so far, their initial proposal was rejected’ by the midfielder.

Despite claims in France suggesting he wants to stay at Everton, the Daily Telegraph states sources close to the Belgian haven’t ruled out a departure before the deadline.

Even if Chelsea want to offer Everton players though in return for Onana, they have hit a huge stumbling block.

The reports adds that many of the players Chelsea were looking to send to Merseyside would not be keen on being part of a deal, hinting at their current position of 19th in the Premier League and two points adrift from safety.

It leaves Chelsea needing to find an alternative proposal, however, most importantly, they need to try to convince Onana to even join them first.
