Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard has played down injury concerns following his early substitution against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Martin Odegaard was seemingly forced off early during Arsenal’s match against Aston Villa on Sunday, having been one of the team’s best performers in the game to that point.

With Arsenal chasing a goal to take the lead, the substitution didn’t make sense from a tactical standpoint, and Mikel Arteta suggested afterwards that it was indeed an enforced change.

“He was feeling something,” Arteta said in his post-match press conference, refusing to elaborate further.

Arsenal are set to take on Bayern Munich on Wednesday night for their Champions League quarter-final second leg, with everything still to play for.

The scores are level at 2-2, and the Gunners will certainly be hoping to have their captain available away in Munich.

So in an encouraging update, Norwegian Arsenal writer Sebastian Pedersen reports that Odegaard told VG Sporten in a lift after the game that he is fine.

Pedersen confirms that Odegaard was indeed hurt, and he couldn’t complete the match on Sunday. But it’s nothing serious, which hopefully means he can be available in midweek.

Odegaard has made 41 appearances for Arsenal this season, scoring 10 goals and providing a further seven assists.

The 25-year-old put in a particularly pivotal performance in Arsenal’s Champions League last-16 second leg match against FC Porto, assisting the equaliser expertly and scoring first in the subsequent penalty shootout.

Gunners fans will want to see similar heroics from their club captain on Wednesday night.
