Angers SCO 1 - 2 Stade Rennais FC
THE MATCH The two sides have been enjoying contrasting fortunes of late, with the hosts on a tear and their visitors plumbing the depths of the relegation zone, but Gérald Baticle's men took the fight to their hosts on Sunday afternoon and looked set for a share of the points until Majer spoiled the party from the spot in the dying stages (90'+4). It was all Rennes in the first half, with Angers 'keeper Paul Bernardoni denying Amine Gouiri and Arnaud Kalimuendo (10') and Benjamin Bourigeaud with a free-kick (26') before the usually clinical Martin Terrier missed from close range (38'). But the hosts got their goal when Terrier worked a one-two with Bourigeaud but let the return pass run through to Gouiri, who made absolutely no mistake in turning home the opener (43'). Angers strike back
Surprisingly, it was Angers who came out of the blocks faster in the second half, and Gérald Baticle's side made sure to take full advantage. Played through by former Rennes forwards Adrien Hunou, Amine Salama passed his one-on-one trust with Steve Mandanda with flying colours, nutmegging the Marseille demigod with an angled shot (53'). The goal put Angers on a surer footing and the chances dried up - in both directions - and it seemed that the visitors had done enough to break a painful three-match losing streak. However, when Ibrahim Amadou was caught out by a long Mandanda clearance and fouled Matthis Abline in the area, the door was opened for Majer to stroke coolly home from the spot and rescue all three points.
Rennes move into fourth ahead of their Round 13 clash at home to Montpellier and Angers remain in 19th as a trip to Monaco looms next weekend. THE PLAYER: Amine Gouiri
OL youth academy product Gouiri may have had a peripatetic career so far despite still being just 22 - he has played for Lyon, Nice and now Rennes - but he has shown sheer quality wherever he has been. And Rennes is no exception! The youngster has taken little time to settle in Brittany and his opener - at the conclusion of what is becoming a trademark sweeping team move for Bruno Genesio's side - was his fifth of the season and his fourth in the last four matches! THE STAT: 4
The rousing win was Rennes' fourth in a row, a result that took the Brittany club's current unbeaten run to eight matches (six wins) while taking the club to fourth place on the Ligue 1 Uber Eats table.
