Mainz turn the screw as Bochum ring changes

Bochum made three substitutions at half-time, with Gerrit Holtmann, Mats Pannewig, and Dani de Wit coming on in an attempt to change the game's momentum. However, Mainz quickly extinguished Bochum's hopes. In the 53rd minute, Phillipp Mwene doubled Mainz's lead with a well-taken finish. The goal seemed to deflate Bochum, and Mainz took full advantage.

Burkardt, who had been a constant threat, added a third in the 73rd minute, effectively sealing the match. Holtmann provided a glimmer of hope for Bochum with a goal in the 84th minute, but it proved a mere consolation; in stoppage time, Paul Nebel put the final nail in Bochum's coffin, scoring Mainz's fourth and confirming a resounding victory.

Relegation looms for Bochum

The result leaves Bochum headed for Bundesliga 2 next season; with Heidenheim winning their match, Bochum can no longer reach the relegation play-off spot. Despite the unwavering support from their fans, who continued to sing even as the goals flew in, Bochum were unable to match Mainz's quality and determination.

For Mainz, the victory keeps their European dreams alive, with Burkardt's goal seeing him set a new club record of 17 goals in a single season. The match was particularly poignant for Bochum veterans Anthony Losilla and Cristian Gamboa, who were playing their last home game for the club.
