The game started slow with neither side registering a shot within the first ten minutes.
However, five minutes later, a last ditch tackle was needed for Heidenheim's Patrick Mainka to stop a certain Mainz goal in the 15th minute.
Despite having more of the ball in the first half an hour, it wasn't Heidenheim who had the better chances as Jonathan Burkhardt's cross in the 27th minute was unable to find teammate Nebel.
A minute later, Jonathan Burkhardt did score however as he opened the scoring for his thirteenth of the season in the Bundesliga to make it 1-0.
After the goal, Heidenheim's confidence took a knock and heading into half time it was the away side who had the higher value of expected goals (xG).
After a double half time substitution which brought on both Marvin Pieringer and Paul Wanner, the hosts Heidenheim were looking to get back into the game.
However, things didn't start off well for them as Burkhardt made a good run down the flank for Mainz and crossed in for Nelson Weiper to double the away side's lead.
This made it 2-0 and meant Jonathan Burkhardt had both a goal and an assist for this tie.
During the 53rd minute, Heidenheim's Honsak tried a shot from range which almost caught out Mainz's Robin Zentner.
In the 67th minute, Nelson Weiper almost scored his second of the game but was unable to keep the header down and on target.
During the 76th minute, Heidenheim broke into the Mainz final third once again but Dominik Kohr blocked the chance for the hosts to pull a goal back.
During the latter stages, Mainz were pinned in their own half and had to scrap every ball to hold onto all three points.
With a great save in the last notable action of the game, Robin Zentner saved Heidenheim player Pieringer's effort to keep a well-deserved clean sheet and make sure the game finished 2-0.
