Mainz and Stuttgart to appeal red cards in Bundesliga defeats

The DFB may have a couple of appeals to consider as the coming workweek gets started. Two Bundesliga clubs – Mainz and Stuttgart find themselves dissatisfied with players ejected from proceedings in their weekend fixtures on double yellows. According to Kicker, Mainz are considering an appeal of Paul Nebel’s ejection while Stuttgart – as promised by sporting director Alexander Wehrle are going to protest Nick Woltemade’s sending off.

Nebel incurred his second yellow card of the match at fourth minute of stoppage time in Saturday’s defeat at Hoffenheim. Match official Sven Jablonski sent the Germany U21 international off for a light push on TSG’s Dennis Geiger. Kicker notes that Jablonski’s decision, harsh though it may have been, probably doesn’t fall into the category of a clear and obvious error. It is such that Mainz may not bother with the appeal.

A little more intelligent intuition [from Jablonski] would have been appreciated,” Mainz sporting director Nico Bungert nevertheless told Sky Germany after the full-time whistle. “The referee was fantastic today, but that decision was a clear mistake.

In the case of Woltemade, a 49th-minute elbow against Werder Bremen’s Niklas Stark and a 65th-minute ankle knock against Marco Friedl both constituted light contact. Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß, starter Angelo Stiller, captain Atakan Karazor, and board chairman Alexander Wehrle all commented on the matter afterwards.

Match official Daniel Schlager did not find himself in the trio’s good graces. Woltemade’s sending off came with the match level at 1-1. It can be argued that Bremen’s eventual 1-2 away victory came courtesy of Schlager’s officiating.

Nick’s height advantage meant the elbow [against Stark] wasn’t high,” Hoeneß said at the post match press conference. “And I don’t want to be tough on Marco Friedl, but he tugged at him a lot and, in my opinion, also foul worthy several times. It was then whistled foul every now and then, but he just goes off without a yellow card. For me, the proportionality is not right.

“[The second yellow] was critical,” Hoeneß continued. “That was simply not a yellow-red card. [Schlager] intervened in the game with that. The game turns and from our point of view it is very bitter that there was a big wrong decision. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth.”

Bremen did it cleverly,” Karazor added in the mixed zone. “They realized that they could get away with a lot on this day and they took advantage of it. And then Nick gets two yellow cards for two fouls.”

It’s not yellow-red,” Stiller said. “I don’t know if he had to give yellow-red. I have no idea what he was thinking. That always makes a difference. It’s hard when you’re a man down.”

Referee Daniel Schlager admitted after the game that it was a mistake,” Wehrle revealed. “Everyone saw that. [We’ll protest] and I don’t think Woltemade will be suspended.”
