After Jürgen Grabowski in 2022, Eintracht’s second 1974 World Cup winner has now had a Deutsche Bank Park stand named in his honour.
The ‘Walk of Fame’ at Deutsche Bank Park, which was opened just last year, the Alex Meier shooting wall, the ‘Sommerweg’ (‘summer path’) featuring Mijat Gacinovic’s solo goal in the 2018 DFB Cup final, the ‘Zum Jürgen’ sports bar in the business area of the ground and, of course, the Eintracht Museum – just some of the lasting tributes to outstanding former players and major club successes throughout the Eagles’ stadium. With the new season upon us, Eintracht have added to that long list by renaming their main stand after club legend Bernd Hölzenbein, ensuring that both side stands at Deutsche Bank Park now bear the names of Eintracht’s two 1974 World Cup winners, Jürgen Grabowski († 2022) and Hölzenbein († 2024).
Two of only four players to surpass 500 appearances for the club, this exceptional duo not only captivated Frankfurt fans but football supporters across the globe in the 1970s. As well as winning two DFB Cups with the Eagles in 1974 and 1975, and the UEFA Cup in 1980, they were part of the West Germany side that won the FIFA World Cup in 1974. During that era, the lyrics of the chant “Frankfurt’s Pride, Grabi and Holz” were adapted to: “Germany’s Pride, Grabi und Holz”. The latter, who scored a club record 160 Bundesliga goals for Eintracht, continued to play a key role after the injury-forced retirement of his fellow West Germany international, helping Eintracht to a third DFB Cup triumph in 1981.
13,000 fans set to fill main stand
By naming the main stand after Hölzenbein, who passed away on 15 April 2024, Eintracht have not only honoured the memory of the late ‘Holz’ but ensured that two Frankfurt legends are posthumously reunited. After the terrace opposite the main stand was named after Grabowski in the spring of 2022, around 13,000 fans can now look forward to taking their seats in the Bernd Hölzenbein Stand from the 2025/26 season onwards.
Axel Hellmann, CEO of Eintracht Frankfurt Fußball AG, said: “By renaming the stand, we’re paying homage to Bernd Hölzenbein’s career. Bernd not only won numerous honours with Eintracht but also played an outstanding role at the club as an official. The fact that both Bernd and his equally gifted team-mate, Jürgen Grabowski, have become iconic names within the architecture of the stadium essentially creates a memorial for them, highlighting their importance to the club and the city.”
