Chelsea will not be signing AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan this summer despite sending a bid for the 30-year-old.
New AC Milan manager, Massimiliano Allegri, confirmed the deal is completely off at his press conference this afternoon, saying, “I am very happy he decided to stay.
“Mike remains the captain and is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe.”
Chelsea need a new number one between the sticks and submitted at least one offer for Maignan, but the Rossoneri rejected the proposal.
Some had postulated that Chelsea might return with another offer later in the transfer window, but Allegri’s comments have poured cold water on those talks.
First-choice Chelsea goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, has endured an error-prone time at Stamford Bridge.
No goalie made more errors leading to a goal in the Premier League this season.
Even second-choice shot-stopper Filip Jorgensen failed to convince with his showings, forcing the Blues to consider a move for Maignan.
However, AC Milan refused to be lowballed by Chelsea for the Frenchman, who is in the final year of his deal.
Chelsea need to head back into the market for a new goalkeeper with Sanchez failing to cover himself in glory at the FIFA Club World Cup.
With Maignan off the table, Chelsea must consider keeping Djordje Petrovic after his stellar spell on loan with Strasbourg this term.
Petrovic deserves to reclaim his starting berth at Chelsea, and any decision to sell him is bordering on silly.
Among goalkeepers with at least 20 Ligue 1 appearances in the 2024/25 season, only Brice Samba (38%) recorded a higher clean sheet percentage than Petrovic (32%).
The Serbian ranked second behind only Marcin Bulka (74.7%) in save percentage, with an impressive 74.5% of shots stopped.
His shot-stopping was instrumental for Strasbourg in defence.
According to the Opta expected goals on target (xGOT) model, he prevented 10.4 goals, conceding 36 times from a combined xGOT value of 46.4.
Petrovic also stood out with the ball at his feet, leading all Ligue 1 goalkeepers in both touches (1,736) and successful passes (1,117).
He set a Ligue 1 record (since Opta began tracking in 2006/07) for most touches (79) and successful passes (64) by a goalkeeper in a single match against Rennes on February 2.
Petrovic is the complete package. Chelsea should be keeping him!
