Crystal Palace have struck gold with the services of Marc Guehi.
The 24-year-old central defender has established himself as a solid Premier League defender with stellar performances and a calm defensive demeanour.
With 115 appearances for Palace, before the start of the 2024/25 season, he was named as club captain, highlighting his leadership skills even at such a young age.
Guehi was called up to the England team this summer for the Euros, and showed his worth by arguably being the Three Lions best player in the tournament.
With all the hype around Guehi and transfer rumours circulating, it has now been reported that he will be rejecting another club in the hopes for a ‘more attractive’ move.
Pete O’Rourke for the Football Insider has stated that the Eagles centre-back will turn down a move back to Chelsea and will wait for more offers to arrive.
Guehi was sold by Chelsea in 2021 in a deal worth £18 million, and the treatment of him by his former team may have put Marc off re-joining the west London club.
O’Rourke further identified that ‘the Blues are believed to have included a clause in their deal with Crystal Palace which has given them matching rights should the Eagles agree to Guehi’s exit.’
Marc was a wanted man this summer, with Newcastle desperately pushing to sign the player but the board slapped a £75 million price tag on the England star, which deterred the Magpies from continuing their advances.
Now O’Rourke has thrown Liverpool’s name in the mix as a potential new club for Guehi.
With the Palace captain’s contract running out in a year, he could be the perfect replacement for Virgil van Dijk who’s personal situation regarding a new deal hasn’t been resolved.
Former England international Michael Dawson praised Guehi for his performances this summer recently after he caught the eye for England at Euro 2024.
“You look at Crystal Palace and the recruitment they do,” Dawson told Sky Sports News. “When he got bought from Chelsea for, I think it was £18 million. I looked at it, because I played against Marc Guehi when he was on loan at Swansea, and certain players fit certain clubs.
“Whatever club comes along for Marc Guehi, he will improve them. In the summer, when he was away with England, that was a question mark and a position we looked at. I tell you something, he was magnificent.
The Reds have been linked to several defenders as a potential Van Dijk replacement, including Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen and Brazilian wonderkid Vitor Reis.
Liverpool will be hoping Van Dijk signs an extended contract, but if he decides to leave, Guehi would be a phenomenal addition.
