Maghoma named Bolton’s Young Player of the Year

Paris Maghoma’s stellar season with Bolton Wanderers was recognised when he was named the Trotters’ Young Player of the Year at their end-of-season awards on Sunday.

The midfielder has scored eight goals for Bolton, the most recent coming last Tuesday in a 2-2 draw at home to Shrewsbury Town, and contributed four assists in 37 games for Ian Evitt’s side.

While those contributions look unlikely to result in automatic promotion for Wanderers, it has still been a hugely successful spell for the midfielder.

Bolton head into the final day of the season needing to beat Peterborough United at Toughsheet Community Stadium, coupled with a Derby County defeat against bottom-of-the-table Carlisle United, alongside a four-goal difference swing, to snatch second place and automatic promotion.

For their part, Michael Olakigbe and Posh could still be in the running for second spot on Saturday.

Their equation is equally unlikely; they need a victory tonight over Cheltenham Town and to beat Bolton, alongside a Derby loss, with an even bigger goal difference swing.

Olakigbe hasn’t been involved for Peterborough since late March due to an ankle injury.

For Fin Stevens and Oxford United, the equation is simpler. Heading to Exeter City this weekend, the U’s need to better Lincoln City’s result at home to Portsmouth to grab the final play-off spot.

That comes following a 1-0 defeat to the Imps last Tuesday and Friday’s 1-1 draw at home to Stevenage.

Stevens played the full 90 minutes in both those games, going past 40 appearances for the season in the process.

Myles Peart-Harris’ Portsmouth can go into the final weekend with the pressure off after they wrapped up a return to the second tier last Tuesday with victory at home to Barnsley.

Conor Shaughnessy’s 89th-minute strike settled a five-goal thriller against Barnsley, confirming promotion and ending their 12-year Championship absence.

Peart-Harris wasn’t involved in the promotion-winning game but did play 45 minutes on Saturday in a 2-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic.

Charlie Goode wasn’t involved in that game for the Latics who finish their campaign on Saturday against Bristol Rovers.

Matt Cox and Tristan Crama will end their spells with Rovers this weekend when they travel to the Latics.

Crama hasn’t been involved since mid-March due to injury while Cox was on their bench for Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Cambridge United before dropping out of the squad that lost to Peterborough United on Saturday.

In Sky Bet League Two, Daniel Oyegoke played 90 minutes in Bradford City's 3-2 win over Walsall on Saturday and Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over play-off rivals Barrow.

Following four victories on the spin, Bradford are now one point behind Barrow in seventh.

It all comes down to Saturday’s home game against Newport County to see if they can squeak in on the final day.
