Barnsley defender Mads Andersen has revealed his recovery from injury is coming along well now with him having returned to no contact training in the last few weeks.

Andersen has endured a frustrating time of it at the start of the campaign with the defender having been unable to make an appearance for the Tykes so far under Markus Schopp.

That comes with the 23-year-old having suffered a freak knee injury at the start of Barnsley’s pre-season period. That has put him on the sidelines for a prolonged period during the first few weeks of the campaign.

However, Schopp speaking to the Barnsley Chronicle last month revealed that it was an injury that should see the defender able to return within weeks rather than months.

The defender is a crucial member of Barnsley’s squad and he managed to make 48 appearances for the Tykes last term scoring one goal in the process as he helped them reach the play-offs.

Speaking to Barnsley’s official club website, Andersen has revealed that he is progressing well with his recovery and he hopes to get back on the field as soon as possible. Although the 23-year-old did not put a timescale on any return.

“My recovery at the minute is going very well!

“I had two great training sessions this week, where we focused a little bit more on my hamstrings. And that actually helped a lot with my MCL (medial collateral ligament).

“I’m not putting any timescale on anything, I’m just taking it one day at a time.

“But obviously, I hope I’m able to return as soon as possible. It’s my first real injury like this and I’m doing whatever it takes to recover in the right way.

“It’s been very frustrating, but that’s how it is. It’s been a new challenge for me that I’m learning from.”

The verdict

It has not been an easy start to the season for Barnsley and they have managed to win just one of their opening eight Championship matches.

That perhaps shows how important the loss of Andersen has been for the Tykes and the defender could have potentially made a difference for them with his quality had been available at the start of the campaign.

You would expect the 23-year-old to come straight into Schopp’s plans in terms of being a regular starter when he makes his return to action.

However, it is vital that the Tykes do not rush the defender back to quickly and risk further potential injury setbacks.

Barnsley do not have the financial resources to go out and sign direct replacements for players of Andersen’s quality. Therefore, they need him to come back fully fit and then sustain that over the course of the rest of the campaign.
