The stage was set at the Santiago Bernabéu as both Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid looked to follow Barcelona into the semi-finals.

Throughout the opening moments, both sides pushed to break the deadlock with key stars getting their feet wet early on.

Vinícius Júnior combined with Karim Benzema but couldn’t get a shot off, while Ángel Correa saw a shot dragged harmlessly wide.

However, despite Real Madrid’s dominance statistically, Atleti were the better side for most of normal time and the hosts’ frail defence was exposed.

Koke provided a ball over the top and Nahuel Molina squared it to former Los Blancos man Álvaro Morata who tapped home for 1-0.

The match continued to be a one-goal game coming into the second half as the host midfield looked puzzled for answers with the attacking line offering zero support.

Atleti, meanwhile, were comfortable on the pitch and pushed to see the game out.

Benzema forced a save from Jan Oblak, only for Vinícius to fail to redirect the ball home before an inch-perfect free-kick from Antoine Griezmann forced Thibaut Courtois into a huge save.

Some key game management from the bosses then changed the atmosphere with 10 minutes to go.

Carlo Ancelotti brought Rodrygo off the bench, and the Brazilian pulled off a brilliant solo run to turn things 1-1. It is an unfortunate sight for Diego Simeone, as he brought scorer Morata off beforehand.

Things would then get worse for the visitors early into extra time as Stefan Savic was shown two yellows in two minutes and Atleti were down to 10.

Then almost instantly, another substitute made an impact as Marco Asensio fizzed a ball across the box, it found Benzema and the captain turned things 2-1 by netting at the near post.

With about 15 minutes to go Atleti then ramped up the pressure and Real Madrid sat back. New signing and ex-Barcelona man Memphis Depy almost turned things level but Courtois made the save.

To pile on the misery, Vinícius Junior added a third in the dying seconds.

In the end, the comeback from the hosts sees Ancelotti’s men reach the semi-finals alongside Barcelona, Osasuna and Athletic Club.
