Alexis Mac Allister insists revenge will not be the motivation for Liverpool when his side take on Manchester United in the Premier League this weekend.

Mac Allister scored the winner as Liverpool beat Sheffield United 3-1 at Anfield on Thursday evening, with the World Cup winner lashing in a stunning finish into the top corner.

Darwin Nunez had opened the scoring for Liverpool after charging down a clearance from Sheffield United goalkeeper Ivo Grbic, though the relegation-battling Blades levelled in the second half through a Conor Bradley own goal.

Mac Allister’s effort fired Liverpool ahead for a second time before Cody Gakpo’s 90th-minute header sealed the three points.

The win moves Liverpool two points ahead of Arsenal and one clear of Manchester City, ahead of a huge showdown with Manchester United at the weekend. The Reds were eliminated from the FA Cup at Old Trafford last month, but Mac Allister insisted revenge is not on the mind for Jurgen Klopp’s team.

“I don’t know if it’s revenge but for sure it will be an important game for us because if we want to win something then we have to win every game. And that’s the aim,” he told TNT Sports.

Mac Allister’s goal was the latest fantastic effort added to his collection, with the midfielder joking that he was keen to prove his wonder goal against Fulham earlier in the season was no fluke.

“I don’t know… we were discussing that! Both of them were very good,” the Argentinian said.

“The most important thing is it helped to win the game and that’s so important. Against Fulham they told me it was lucky, so I had to prove them wrong!”
