After switching his international allegiance from France to Algeria, Houssem Aouar (24) has been called up to the Algerian national team for the first time ahead of the upcoming international break.

The Olympique Lyonnais midfielder was confirmed as part of Djamel Belmadi’s squad set to face Uganda and Tunisia in the upcoming international break on Monday.

The 24-year-old expressed his delight on his first call-up on Instagram, saying: “Finally, we will meet soon”. When the OL academy graduate makes his first appearance for Algeria, it will mark his second international debut, after previously featuring for France in a friendly against Ukraine in 2020.

Whilst Aouar’s international future has been clarified in recent months, where he will be playing his club football next season is still unclear. The midfielder’s contract with boyhood club OL is set to expire at the end of June and he is free to negotiate with other clubs. Several clubs are reportedly interested in Aouar, with Roma currently in pole position to sign him on a free transfer.
