Olympique Lyonnais’ future is currently up in the air. The club are awaiting a decision on their appeal against their relegation to Ligue 2, which was confirmed by the DNCG last week.
Regardless of whether the club are reinstated in Ligue 1 or left in Ligue 2, the club will be facing the consequences of their financial mismanagement next season. Michele Kang has replaced John Textor as club president and she is set to herald a period of austerity at the club.
Whilst awaiting the commission’s verdict on their relegation appeal, Kang is preparing for the future, and it will be a frugal one. As per L’Équipe, no players will be brought in on a salary exceeding €200,000 per month. That cap does not apply to Corentin Tolisso, expected to be named club captain, who is on €450,000 per month. It is his importance on the pitch that will see him retained, but the same does not go for Nemanja Matić, on €400,000.
Overall, Lyon are looking to bring the wage bill down to €89m for next season. Last season, the wage bill was nearly €160m.
