Lyon striker Moussa Dembélé rejects Southampton transfer

Olympique Lyonnais striker Moussa Dembélé (26) has rejected the opportunity to sign for Southampton, according to a report from L’Equipe. Dembélé is playing a peripheral role with Lyon this season, having appeared in fourteen Ligue 1 games, most of them coming from the bench, and scored only two goals. In the last three Ligue 1 outings, he was an unused substitute.

He is out of contract next June and the January transfer window was Lyon’s last chance to recoup a small part of the €22m they paid Celtic for him in 2018. Dembélé reportedly spoke with Frank Lampard with a transfer to Everton in his sights, but the sacking of the Toffees’ boss pulled the plug on the move.

Barring an unlikely change of heart, Dembélé will therefore stick around in Laurent Blanc’s squad and leave Lyon on a free this June. Meanwhile, Southampton appear to have won the race for the signing of out-of-favour Ghanaian international winger Kamaldeen Sulemana (20).
