Chelsea were beaten 4-3 on penalties by Lyon following a 2-2 deadlock at the Women’s International Champions Cup semi-finals in Portland.
Emma Hayes side let a 2-0 lead slip in the last quarter of an hour, before Inès Benyahia’s spot-kick decided the tie.
Erin Cuthbert’s ball over the top set up Sam Kerr for a perfect chip over the keeper and into the back of the net, with Lauren James curling in the second on 50 minutes.
But Lindsey Horan’s free-kick found the top corner and into the final two minutes, Danielle van de Donk played in Signe Bruun to equalise.
Chelsea will now play hosts Portland in Saturday’s third-place play-off.
The second semi also went to penalties, as Las Rayadas de Monterrey beat Portland Thorns 3-2 after a 1-1 score at full-time.
Marissa Everett netted after only five minutes for Portland but Monterrey’s Diana Garcia equalised midway through the second half.
