Pierre Sage has been working his understated magic at Olympique Lyonnais since becoming manager of the club, Les Gones came from behind against Montpellier last week (2-1) capping off their third successive win in all competitions with a rocketed strike from Maxence Caqueret. After being boosted by their new signings, including a first start for Saïd Benrahma, Lyon now return home looking for a fourth successive victory against an OGC Nice side who’ll be out for revenge after being defeated in the Cote d’Azur derby (2-3).
Last week’s win against Montpellier saw Lyon leapfrog their relegation rivals, but the danger of the drop is still yet to dissipate, with OL still susceptible of being overtaken by relegation play-off place holders FC Lorient this weekend.
Manager Pierre Sage was fully wary of his side’s precarious position despite promising recent results. “We have the same lead over the first relegation position as we did before the last matchday,” admitted Sage. “One win isn't enough, we haven't achieved our objective. We're getting closer, but only the final result will count.”
Francesco Farioli wary of Lyon’s progress
Meanwhile Les Aiglons are still behind Paris Saint-Germain in second place, but their defensive fragility in recent weeks has seen the side from the French capital establish a notable lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table. Coach Franscesco Farioli was wary of the threat of a more confident Lyon side.
"At the start of the season, Lyon's objective was to fight for the top of the table. The Lyonnais are in a very positive frame of mind," said the Italian coach in his pre-match press conference. "They've changed their mentality and their approach. They're more interested in winning the ball back higher up the pitch."
