According to So Foot, Olympique Lyonnais have sounded out a move for former Olympique de Marseille Jorge Sampaoli as a replacement for Fabio Grosso.
Grosso only arrived at Lyon in September but has failed to inspire a revival. OL began the season poorly under Laurent Blanc and remain bottom of Ligue 1 after Round 12. Whilst Les Gones are certainly mired in a relegation scrap, Grosso did get his first win as manager, against Stade Rennais just before the international break.
However, Lyon’s executives are perhaps unconvinced that Grosso, a former player at the club, is the man to lead them to safety. According to So Foot, Lyon have an interest in Sampaoli, who has been out of work since leaving Flamengo in September. Former OL sporting director Juninho revealed that the Argentinian manager had been a target in the past. Whilst there is interest from Lyon, a return to Marseille can also not be ruled out. Gennaro Gattuso’s contract runs until the end of the season but will be renewed in the event of qualification for the Champions League. Les Phocéens are currently 10th. Sampaoli’s return to the Vélodrome is made more plausible due to Javier Ribalta’s recent departure.
