On Friday night, Lyon lost away at Auxerre for the opening fixture of Ligue 1 gameweek 24. It is a disappointing result for Les Gones given their recent upturn in form and the position of their relegation-battling opponents. OL forward Moussa Dembélé (26) opened the scoring past the half-hour mark. Auxerre then scored two quick-fire goals in three minutes through a Gaëtan Perrin (26) penalty and a header from Jubal (29) at the start of the second half. Croatian centre-back Dejan Lovren (33) was livid with the way Lyon fumbled their lead.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video, the 2018 World Cup runner-up lamented his side’s performance that kept Les Gones into ninth place. “Our second half was unacceptable, underlined Lovren. We did not show enough personality. It’s not enough, we did not show balls. We’re here thinking they were gonna let us win. We’re stupid to think like that.

His midfield teammate Maxence Caqueret’s (23) tone was no different, speaking of a catastrophic second half. “We have no right to make those mistakes. We lacked aggressiveness, we were not up for it and we only have ourselves to blame.” Lyon will face bottom-placed Angers next week to turn the situation around. Skipper and best goalscorer Alexandre Lacazette (31) is not expected to feature against the Anjou side.
