Lyon were looking to bounce back from their defeat at FC Nantes in midweek in the Coupe de France semi-finals but their day got off to a bad start. Rennes went in front in the 11th minute at the Groupama Stadium as Amine Gouiri played the ball through the legs of Sinaly Diomandé before scoring with an emphatic finish against his former club.

The hosts turned the game on its head in the second half, however. Corentin Tolisso’s equalising goal was the trigger for the fightback as the midfielder produced a stunning finish from range for his first Ligue 1 goal since April 2017 (60’).

OL went ahead midway through the second half after the Rennes defence failed to clear their lines, with Johann Lepenant returning the ball into the six-yard area for captain Alexandre Lacazette to score (68’). And they made the points safe with 11 minutes left as Bradley Barcola converted after fine set-up play by Rayan Cherki.

Laurent Blanc’s side have lost just one of their last 11 league games and are not out of contention to qualify for Europe. They lie just three points behind sixth-placed Rennes, who have lost eight out of 15 league games played since the World Cup break.

THE PLAYER: Corentin Tolisso

Tolisso picked his moment to score a first Ligue 1 goal in six years, and what a strike it was to get OL back on level terms.

THE STAT: 18

Lacazette scored his 18th league goal of the campaign.
