Lynn Williams was only with NJ/NY Gotham FC for two seasons. However, it feels like she was with the team forever. The forward's signing was one of the biggest in team history and her attacking abilities were vital to the team's run to make the playoffs in 2023 and become the NWSL Champions.
While she faced injury problems in 2024, her impact on the team was still felt. She scored seven goals in all competitions and contributed on the wings when she struggled to score. She was not afraid to challenge opposing players and did well defensively.
Williams was a Gotham FC fan favorite during her time with the Bats. It is sad she was traded to Seattle Reign FC before the end of her contract and supporters could not see her in New Jersey for one more year. At least they will have the memories of her time with the club. So, here are her top three moments with the club.
Williams made her debut for Gotham FC in the first NWSL game of 2023. The Bats played Angel City FC and immediately fans thought the season would be a repeat of 2022 when the Los Angeles side scored to go in front in the 11th minute.
Thankfully, a penalty kick taken by Midge Purce tied the match. It was Williams though who won all three points after her one-touch goal in the 65th minute put Gotham in front. Her first goal for the club is a memorable one since it was the first win of the season and the start of the Championship year.
2024 might have been Gotham FC's most successful season based on points and how they played, but 2023 was the year they won the most coveted trophy. Williams started and scored the Bats' first goal of the game.
The forward's goal was not one of her thrilling ones. However, the tap-in was Gotham's first Championship goal, for the team had never played in the NWSL Championship before. This made it special and was a major reason why the team went on to win.
The most amazing moment came this year, and yes, it is another goal. Williams broke the NWSL goal-scoring record in the win over the Chicago Red Stars. She scored her 79th goal in all NWSL competitions, breaking the record via a header into the back of the net.
The fact a moment like this happened to a player in a Gotham FC shirt was pretty incredible. And similar to the NWSL Championship, the goal was part of why the Bats won that match. Williams had some impressive moments with the team, but this is one that will forever be remembered.
